Courtown Waterworld Ltd is an ambitious community based Company seeking to recruit a Senior Instructor to help develop its adventure and leisure centre complex into one of the leading leisure and tourist attractions in the South East of Ireland.

The outdoor adventure activities include climbing wall, abseiling, new junior gravity, dual zip wire, quick jump, archery, and laser tag games. The complex also has adjacent woodland walks that facilitate orienteering courses.

The successful candidate will be a dynamic individual with the ability to supervise the day to day running of the existing operation. The role requires flexibility with shifts and weekend working. Strong inter-personal and technical and administration skills are required to lead and develop staff.

The position reports to the General Manager. Applicants should have experience at Senior Instructor level and hold relevant qualifications. First Aid experience/ qualification is essential.

Are you planning on participating in an adventure activity, going to a climbing wall, booking your kids into a party at a ropes course? You or your kids could be at undue risk............

Like any service, all outdoor providers are not the same in terms of qualifications, safety systems or activity management. Given the potentially fatal or life changing risks involved in adventure activities, as consumers or parents you need to check some basics before participation.  Currently there is no inspection or licensing scheme in Ireland for adventure activity providers although the process is underway to legislate for this sector following some serious incidents.  Currently anybody can offer to provide adventure activities even if they do not have qualifications or insurance. In the mean time what can you do to check a provider is competent and safe before booking with them:

1. Ask to see their activity risk assessments (this is a legal requirement to have prepared)
2. Ask to see their insurance certificate so you know if you have an accident and they are negligent you have recourse for damages
3. Check what qualifications your instructor has.  Bona Fide instructors should have a national award in their respective discipline such as Single Pitch Award for rock climbing, Climbing Wall Award for indoor climbing, Mountain Leader Award for leading in the mountains, Kayak Instructor Award, Coasteering Instructor Award, ERCA Ropes Course Instructor Award etc
4. Ask what the minimum supervision ratio is for instructors to participants
5. Ask what emergency or rescue procedures are in place
6. Ask what internal and external (independent) inspections they carry out on their safety equipment and structures such as ropes courses
7. When you turn up for the activity, ensure a disclaimer and risk acknowledgement is provided so you are aware of the activity risks
8. Before participating ensure you are given an adequate briefing and instruction and check the condition and fit of any safety equipment you are given such as harness, buoyancy aid, helmet etc. If you are not happy with the safety equipment, instruction, supervision ratios etc. don't participate!

If the provider is not giving you clear responses to your questions or is refusing to give you the above information, seek an alternative!

Adventure Safety Ireland were delighted to work with the Pieta fundraising team to prepare event risk assessments for the Darkness Into Light annual fundraising event in Marlay Park.  We worked closely with the team to identify potential hazards across the route and site and to put appropriate safety measures and plans in place to cover all eventualities. This successful event will be held again next year.
